The answer to the Facebook giraffe riddle is ...

Nearly a half a million people clicked on my story yesterday about the Facebook giraffe riddle.

Today there's a problem. An argument. Seems social media can't decide what's the right answer. Is it door or eyes

For those of you who slept through yesterday here's the riddle again

It s 3 a.m. the doorbell rings and you wake up. Unexpected visitors It s your parents and they are here for breakfast. You have strawberry jam honey wine bread and cheese. What is the first thing you open

When I first saw it I said door. And the person who posted it told me I was correct and therefore I did not need to change my profile photo to a giraffe. Door makes perfect sense. You aren't going to leave your parents outside and have breakfast are you (Hmmm. Let's ponder that for a minute. Never mind.)

Then people started arguing with me.

Eyes There's only one acceptable answer and it's eyes. Case closed wrote one person on my Google Plus page.

Eyes There's a case for that. It's 3 a.m. You have to open your eyes before anything else can happen right

No. Not really.

First of all the way the riddle is phrased you are already up. So if you are up your eyes are open. And therefore you open the door first.

But even if you don't read it that way who says you have to open your eyes to accomplish anytihng in the riddle If I chose to keep my eyes closed or was unable to open my eyes for any reason I could still let my parents in and enjoy breakfast.

Right Sure. And for that reason the answer is door.

Although there are some compelling solutions that also work.

Another answer from the Chicago Tribune Facebook page that got a lot of likes yesterday was wine. Opening the door to your parents at 3 a.m. could require lots of wine.

And here in the newsroom someone suggested mind. You need an open mind to see what your parents want at 3 a.m.

All good all creative. But as far as I'm concerned there is one answer. Door. You can argue for something else but if you respond to me with anything other than door I'm going to make you change your profile photo.
