Frys.com Open awards $1 million to charity

Frys.com Open Tournament Chairwoman and Fry s Electronics co founder and Executive Vice President Kathy Kolder announced this week that the 2013 Frys.com Open will award $1 million from tournament proceeds to a number of designated charities.

The tournament has awarded more than $6 million to charity since its inception in 2006.

The 2013 Frys.com Open was a success and we are pleased knowing tournament proceeds will benefit the lives of others Kolder said in a news release. Our thanks go out to our Northern California community the more than 1 100 dedicated volunteers and our generous sponsors who make this event possible.

The Frys.com Open s primary beneficiary is the American Institute of Mathematics a Palo Alto based organization whose mission is to advance mathematical knowledge through collaboration to broaden participation in mathematics and to increase the awareness of the contributions of mathematics to society. Other beneficiaries include the First Tee of Silicon Valley Northern California Golf Association Foundation Special Olympics of Northern California and several additional community charities.

Jimmy Walker of Boerne Texas shot 17 under par total to secure his first PGA Tour victory and the $900 000 winner s check at CordeValle Golf Club in Santa Clara County.

It was the season opening event in the newly reconfigured 2013 14 PGA Tour schedule the first time the Tour has gone to a wraparound season.

Walker currently leads the 2013 14 FedExCup standings. Walker also secured a spot in next year s Masters at Augusta National.

The Frys.com Open moves to Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa and will be played the week of Oct. 6 12 2014. It will be a $5 million event played on the North Course.

The Frys.com Open is the opening tournament on the PGA Tour s FedExCup schedule.

The Silverado North Course a championship layout that Johnny Miller redesigned made Golfweek s Top 100 Resort Courses for 2012. Miller lengthened the course which features water crossings elevation changes and routing through oak pine and redwood trees. Enhancing the makeover was a complete bunker renovation. There are 24 new tees on the course and a par 72 layout that plays 7 226 yards from the tournament tees.

Silverado hosted 14 PGA Tour events from 1968 through 1980 and was the site of a Champions Tour stop from 1989 to 2002.

The Silverado winner s circle includes Miller who is now one of the resort s owners. Other champions include Jack Nicklaus Tom Watson and Ben Crenshaw.

Past Champions Tour winners here include Lee Trevino Tom Kite and Dave Stockton.

Launched in 2006 the Frys.com Open is an official PGA Tour tournament benefiting many local and national charities.

Next year s Frys.com Open with $900 000 going to the winner will feature a full field with 132 players. The tournament will be televised all four days on the Golf Channel.

The tournament has options for similar dates in 2015 and 2016.

Title sponsor Fry s Electronics is a privately owned retailer with 34 nationwide locations and is headquartered in San Jose.

Vintage also qualified for the Northern California Regionals of the 2013 CIF State Championships.
