“Searching For Sugar Man” won the Oscar for best documentary this year, but it’s more than that – it’s one of the best music films and most unlikely story ever. The singer Rodriguez put out two albums in the early '70s and soon after disappeared from the music scene, convinced he was a flop. He spent the next decades doing construction work.
Little did he know in those pre-Internet days that his music had become a sensation in South Africa and in the words of the film he was bigger than Elvis Presley there. Decades later the filmmakers tracked him down in his native Detroit and brought the living legend to his fans.

What most people don’t know is that they ran out of budget to finish the film – so some scenes were filmed on an iPhone, using a $1.99 app called “8mm Vintage Camera” to make the footage match up with the real stuff the filmmakers had in the can. The results were seamless, and the Oscar win speaks for itself.
It works on both iPhones and iPads and gives you not only a choice of lenses but varying amounts of deterioration, camera shakiness, and different programs that take you back through the film styles of previous decades – all the way to grainy 1920s-style black-and-white. You can shoot new video or apply the filters to things you’ve already shot.
