At MLB All Star Game Mets Matt Harvey makes his mark enjoys his striking debut

Matt Harvey made his mark and not just on Robinson Cano s leg. The Mets ace left an impression in his first All Star Game a crowning moment of sorts for the phenom who has captured the imagination of the city throwing two scoreless innings as the starting pitcher in front of a sold out Citi Field on Tuesday night.

But he got off to a rocky start hitting the Yankees second baseman just above the right knee and forcing him out of the game in the first inning.

Obviously the last thing I wanted to do was go out there and possibly injure somebody Harvey said. When he came off obviously I apologized and made sure that he was OK. . . . I think he understood that you know it wasn t intentional obviously.

I apologize.

Cano who exited with a bruised right quad was just the second batter Harvey faced. The first Mike Trout doubled to right field on the game s first pitch.

Obviously there were some jitters early going on out in the bullpen but for some reason once I got out there I felt great said Harvey. I felt like I was home.

Elsa Harvey allows the first two batters he faces to reach base then sets down six in a row.

He said the pitch that hit Cano was just a fastball inside that got away.

With runners on first and second and nobody out Harvey faced Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera the first man to win the Triple Crown in 45 years.

He struck him out swinging.

The pitcher got Chris Davis who is leading the majors with 37 homers to fly out to center before striking out Jose Bautista to end the first inning.

The last thing I want is to get down 3 0 in an All Star Game Harvey said.

I knew I had to make good pitches and throwing to the best catcher in the game it makes it a lot easier just to trust him and go with what he calls Harvey said of Yadier Molina.

Robert Sabo Harveymania grips fans at Citi Field all season but especially during the All Star Game.

The pitcher retired the side 1 2 3 in the second getting David Ortiz to fly out striking out Adam Jones and getting Joe Mauer on a lineout.

Harvey walked off the mound head down as thunderous applause cascaded down on him.

I am used to walking off in the second inning and going back out there so I really didn t pay attention to it Harvey said. I wish I kind of stayed in the moment a little bit and gave a head nod or whatnot.

That was about the only moment Harvey who at 24 became the youngest All Star Game starter since Dwight Gooden in 1988 at 23 did not soak up in his first All Star Game experience. Usually grouchy on the afternoon of a start he was happy to talk to reporters in the clubhouse before the game.

He enjoyed all the pregame activities including doing a comedy spot on a late night show Monday.

Oh it was absolutely so much fun Harvey said. Just being in the locker room with all the guys the whole experience the red carpet it being in New York and starting. As a kid I don t think you could have dreamed of doing something like that.

It was a tremendous honor and something I am very thankful for.
