CBS President Nina Tassler stressed the importance of what the network actually picked up and reminded reporters that discussions about the future of other projects could continue after the upfronts but the odds of either Red or Cop being in that mix are negligible at best.
In the case of Red which was introduced in a two part arc on NCIS LA it appears that the network simply wasn't impressed with what they saw. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't Tassler said about spinoffs. Protecting the franchise was really important. Which sounds like a roundabout way of saying Red simply wasn't up to the NCIS standard.
Tassler also pointed to CBS' limited shelf space one positive of the network's highly rated programming is there are very few timeslots to fill each season and the strong line up of pilots they had to choose from as other reasons both Red and Cop weren't ordered to series.
We have to make tough choices Tassler said about Cop which would have brought Eddie Murphy's iconic film franchise to TV. Murphy was expected to reprise his Axel Foley role in a recurring capacity while Brandon T. Jackson starred as Foley's son. Although the detective procedural surely would've had a comedic bent Tassler noted that CBS' priority this season was half hour comedy. (Reports persist that Cop could be shopped to other networks including cable.)
CBS ordered five new comedies for the 2013 14 season with four set to premiere in the fall and just three new dramas only one of which is scheduled for fall.
