Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster have one of the most rock solid unions in showbusiness.
But the veteran rocker has revealed that they went through a rocky patch that saw them split for two weeks.
Their brief break up was revealed after Rod 68 explained the meaning behind one of the songs on his new album.
Patriarch Rod Stewart treated his family to dinner at Bouchon Restaurant in Beverly Hills
He told Life Magazine 'I cover Tom Waits Picture In A Frame on my new album Time.
'Penny and I broke up for two weeks and the song is about that time.
'I asked her for a photo of herself in a frame so that I could see her when I went to bed and when I woke up.'
Secret split Rod revealed that he split from his partner of 13 years Penny Lancaster for two weeks
Rod added that had he been a younger man he would have lost Penny who is mother to his two youngest children.
'I have always loved women won some lost some but it s not about the magic touch it s about being a better person and a good listener.
'I met Penny in my 50s and if I had not learnt by that point in my life I was never going to ' he mused.
Rod continued that there are some things he has never done as he knows women don't approve.
'I have taken a lot of risks when it comes to relationships but I have never gambled or smoked women don t like that.
'You have to take the good with the bad and women prefer you when you re truthful.'
Women also prefer it when a man coughs up for dinner which Rod was more than happy to do when he took some of his brood out for dinner on Wednesday evening.
He took Renee Ruby and Sean plus 42 year old Penny for dinner at exclusive French restaurant Bouchon in Beverley Hills.
Smiling now Rod was with his children Ruby Renee Stewart and Sean as well as Penny for the meal out
As he left the eatery he counted a thick wad of crisp banknotes as he grinned knowingly at waiting photographers.
Penny looked relaxed clearly unphased by her husband of thirteen years' revelation that they had almost ended their union after she walked out on him.
She was wearing a pair of leather trousers a patterned cape and a floppy hat for the dinner date.
Rod looked suave in beige and tweed his white shirt undone at the neck.
On Thursday morning British fans were treated to a pre recorded interview with Rod speaking about his autobiography to the presenters of This Morning.

He also took the opportunity to reiterate his love for his family who inspired him when he ran out of things to sing about.
He said 'Everyone asks me this there was a point in my career when I gave up on songwriting because a) I didn t think I had anything to say and b) because I was getting lazy.'
But he found that after jamming in the studio for a few hours and thinking about his colourful love life he was soon back in the zone.
'There s a song about divorce which I know a great deal about one about starting out in show business and the support I got from my dad in particular and a tribute to my children ' he said.
Still rocking Rod will soon be heading off on a world tour and said that London Glasgow and Los Angeles are the toughest crowds
Rod is off on tour next month and revealed that although he enjoys it he still faces some tough crowds.
'It s always the most demanding especially London and Glasgow for obvious reasons and Los Angeles where I live the home crowd which I call them but I give 110 per cent every night ' he said.

Love Rod and saw him in concert in Frankfurt a few years ago and he was amazing So charismatic and was on stage all the time
