NHL scores Blackhawks beat Capitals Jets stun Oilers

The 2013 14 NHL season kicked off on Tuesday night with a trio of games that featured a little bit of everything.

The Blackhawks raised another Stanley Cup banner to the rafters and outlasted the Washington Capitals at the United Center while the Maple Leafs went into Montreal and knocked off their rivals with a 4 2 win. The biggest headline to come out of that game however will be the fact that Canadiens forward George Parros had to leave the game on a stretcher after he hit his head on the ice during a fight with Colton Orr.

In the late game the Winnipeg Jets completed a third period rally with two goals in the final 10 minutes including the first NHL goal for defenseman Jacob Trouba to knock off the Edmonton Oilers.

1. How effective will the injured members of the Chicago Blackhawks fare

Corey Crawford showed a little bit of rust by allowing four goals in the win but Marian Hossa looked like his usual self (which would be incredible) by scoring a goal adding an assist and putting five shots on Capitals goalie Braden Holtby in his 17 minutes of ice time.

2. What about Brooks Laich

Laich played 17 26 for the Capitals in the loss and other than winning nearly 70 percent of his face offs didn't figure into the game much. He finished as a minus 2 and recorded just one shot on goal in the loss. He was also credited with two blocked shots and a hit.

3. How will Danny Briere perform in his debut in a Canadiens jersey

Not great. He managed to get four shots on goal but he also spent some time in the penalty box (as did the rest of his teammates) for a hold and a too many men on the ice call. His game has always been all about offense and if he's not scoring he's really not helping much. That was on display on Tuesday.

4. The first shot in the Maple Leafs goaltender competition

It wasn't the best performance of James Reimer's career but after a slow start that saw him surrender two goals in the first period Reimer was good enough to help lead the Maple Leafs to their first win of the season. He stopped 34 of 37 shots.

5. Oil change or Oil spill

Definitely a spill and what a spectacular spill it was. Midway through the second period the Oilers owned a two goal lead only to watch Winnipeg come back with three straight goals to finish the game including two in the final 10 minutes. Rookie Jacob Trouba tied the game with a rocket of a slap shot and then just four minutes later Michal Frolik scored the eventual game winner by potting his second goal of the night.

What moment from Tuesday night's games will be making headlines in the coming days

There is no question that it's going to be the unfortunate and scary injury to Montreal Canadiens forward George Parros as a result of his fight with Colton Orr. Parros suffered a concussion and was taken to the hospital after he fell face first on the ice during a third period skirmish with the Maple Leafs' enforcer. The fighting debate has been reaching a boiling point over the past couple of years and this incident isn't going to do anything to make it go away.

Stat of the Night

Not only did the Maple Leafs earn their first victory of the season they also finished the night on top of the Canadiens in the shots department with a 38 37 edge. Why such a big deal Because the Maple Leafs made it a habit last season to get outshot in games and rely almost entirely on Reimer and Ben Scrivens to bail them out. They outshot their opponents just 12 times over the course of the 2013 season.

Post to Post Mikhail Grabovski had a huge debut for the Capitals but it wasn't enough in Chicago. In case you missed it the first time around Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville was furious on the bench. Rich Clune of the Nashville Predators wants to be the NHL's ultimate pest. He has the right role model for it. When it comes to the coaching hot seat Vegas seems to think Peter Laviolette is on thin ice.
