Right seizes on down Amber Alert site

The website for the missing child alert system Amber Alert is back up and running after conservatives called attention to its being down over the weekend.

A spokesperson for the Justice Department on Monday said the Amber Alert system itself was never down with two alerts issued over the weekend and said the site had been restored to prevent confusion.

The website amberalert.gov was redirecting visitors to a Department of Justice site that read Due to the lapse in federal funding this Office of Justice Programs (OJP) website is unavailable. A number of media organizations including Washington Examiner and conservatives picked up on the message accusing President Barack Obama of using the government shutdown to pick and choose what pain to inflict.

On Monday Justice Department spokesman Brian Fallon responded to the criticism and said the website was back up.

As of 11 a.m. Monday morning the website was functional although if users tried to navigate there from Google they were still rerouted to the Justice Department s website down page.

The White House referred questions about the site s shutdown to the Justice Department. The department did not immediately respond to a request for more information about why the site was shut down.
