Whitney Butler a dietitian with Lehigh Valley Health Network thwarted my plans.

Earlier this week Dunkin' Donuts unveiled the glazed doughnut breakfast sandwich an unholy combination of a glazed doughnut bacon and eggs. Its arrival into the saturated market of breakfast sandwiches high in saturated fat was met with apprehension from some.

One commenter on lehighvalleylive.com derided it as disgusting while another asked Who at DD marketing decided we need a doughnut surrounding our eggs and bacon

I planned on hitting up Dunkin' Donuts in Easton s Centre Square and ordering up one of these bad boys for the purpose of writing an online review. It was going to publish today to coincide with National Doughnut Day a fabricated holiday in which Dunkin' Donuts gives you a free doughnut if you purchase a beverage.

Butler who agreed to do a phone interview with me about the perils of eating such a sandwich talked me out of it. As a dietitian she s seen this type of gimmick before in the fast food industry. These offerings often billed as both sweet and savory pose a risk even for the fast food diner who just wants to try it out to see what it tastes like she said.

Everyone says they ll try it once but when we combine sugar salt and fat altogether it creates almost an addictive response in the pleasure center of our brain Butler said. It s setting us up to want it again and again and again.

And eating it again and again and again obviously isn t healthy.

Although Dunkin' Donuts notes the sandwich weighs in at 360 calories which is actually less than its recently released turkey sausage sandwich Butler notes that it s a bad 360 calories.

It shows there are 8 grams of saturated fat and 730 mg of sodium she said referring to the sandwich s nutritional facts. The saturated fat clogs your arteries. That amount of sodium is about a third of the daily recommended amount.

She suggested that those hungry for a breakfast sandwich opt to make one themselves using two slices of toast an egg and a slice of turkey bacon. That comes in under 300 calories and leaves room for fruit and low fat yogurt to make the meal a balanced one.

The conversation with Butler was enough to at least postpone my plan of getting the glazed doughnut breakfast sandwich. This reaction surprised me considering I m still the same person who once attempted to split an order of 100 Buffalo wings with a buddy one night before an AC/DC concert in Philadelphia. Although I m kind of ashamed to admit it I m also the same person who polished off two sugar laden freezer pops moments before she called.

But in this case my curiosity about what this sandwich tastes like just isn t that great.

For those who also decide to opt out stay healthy. For those who do try the sandwich drop me a line and let me know if it is in fact addictive.

As I ve illustrated in this post I m easily persuaded in matters related to food.
