Former Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton will start his first NFL playoff game on Sunday when his Carolina Panthers host the San Francisco 49ers in an NFC divisional playoff game. Newton will be hoping to reverse the wicked playoff curse of quarterbacks who won the most prestigious award in college football.

In the past 17 years only three Heisman quarterbacks have started a game in the NFL playoffs. Here s how their last postseason game ended for each

Robert Griffin III (1/6/2013) Tore ACL.

Tim Tebow (1/14/2012) Never had another start in the NFL currently works for an ESPN channel that won t launch until August.

Carson Palmer (1/6/2006) Tore ACL.

Ouch ouch and ouch especially for Tebow. You know you ve had a rough NFL career when you re the most sympathetic figure on a list with two guys who suffered catastrophic knee injuries. At least RG3 and Palmer are still in the league.

Before that list the last Heisman winner to start a playoff game was Ty Detmer who was pulled from his 1996 game with the Philadelphia Eagles. Before Detmer it was 1986 winner Vinny Testaverde. Of Heisman quarterbacks only Roger Staubach and Jim Plunkett led their teams to a Super Bowl win.

The last quarterback to win both a Heisman and an NFL playoff game Well we sort of cheated. It s Tebow who started two playoff games winning a wild card game two years ago ( ) with an 80 yard touchdown pass in overtime.

All of this is a long way of saying Cam Newton has some history to overcome on Sunday.
