Womens wrestling legend Mae Young gravely ill at the age of 90

One of the world's early pioneers of female wrestling who went on to became one of the sport's most famous figures is gravely ill it has been reported.

Mae Young 90 became a legend in wrestling during her astonishing nine decade career.

Known as The Amazing Mae Young she joined the male dominated sport when she was just 15.

She went on to become the first National Wrestling Alliance's U.S. Women s champion.

Perhaps more importantly she inspired countless women to join the sport.

Incorrect reports yesterday stated that Young had died. However the Charleston Post Courier has since reported that she is instead gravely ill .

The wrestling icon was first placed on a life support machine in December.

In 2008 she was inducted into the World Wrestling Entertainment hall of fame for her achievements in the sport.
